How We Got The Last Laugh

Posted on April 16, 2023

4/16/98: Managed to rise early and get off to Ephesus. We actually walked all the way there, up the whole hill and back again. Ruth’s back pain from the surgery three months ago is diminishing, and her strength is improving.

4/16/23: Ephesus was fascinating. We especially enjoyed the amphitheater, which was carved into a hillside. Also, the Library of Celsus was impressive. This library is a building within a building! They literally built an outer wall that completely encased an inner wall, with about 2.5 feet of space between. This provided insulation for temperature control in order to protect the scrolls and books inside the building. Archive science was a thing even in antiquity!

Back at Homeros, we discussed some tea with Oye when an Aussie named Peter N. arrived, looking quite road-worn. After an hour of chit chat, he asked to see a room, only to hear Oye say “There were none tonight, but there would be tomorrow!”  I just about cracked up as she tried to tell him he could stay on the couch in the common room. She did convince him to stay.

Oye had joked every night during our stay that “Tomorrow is my birthday!” So, on this last night of our stay we had to have the last laugh. At dinner time we surprised her with a birthday cake.

Flanking one of the doors into the Library of Celsus are two statues. The inscriptions read: ΣΟΦΙΑ ΚΕΛΣΟΥ: Wisdom of Celsus; and ΑΡΕΤΗ ΚΕΛΣΟΥ: Virtue of Celsus.
