Albuquerque To Amarillo

Posted on March 6, 2024

3/6/99: Slept in, and then ate too many donuts from the checkout office as we left… We drove through Madrid (pronounced MAD·rid) on our way to Santa Fe. I was in that town a few years ago during a design conference, so, I wanted to get to show Ruth around. We visited St. Francis Cathedral as well as Loretto Chapel with its famous spiral staircase (no nails, two 360º turns and without clear means of support)… We continued on back roads to Amarillo so that we could enjoy the streams, majestic mountains and dense forests of northern New Mexico. But we came within drops of running out of fuel! Color me foolish… Stopped for the night at a Motel 6 in Amarillo…

NOTE: The photo above shows Ruth and I beside our rental car, in the lovely wilds of northern New Mexico.

The famous spiral staircase in Santa Fe’s Loretto Chapel. No nails or screws.
