Kahakaloa Bay

Posted on February 19, 2024

2/19/99: Another library day…

2/19/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.

There are other good trails and shore-line stops to make as you go north from Waihee. One of our favorite stops is Kahakaloa Bay with the gigantic hill of Pu’u Koa’e that looms over the cove and village below. The road on either side of the bay is high above the water and affords spectacular views, then turns inland to swoop down to the village and rocky beach below. The first time we drove this route together, in 1995, we watched a pod of dolphins playing in the bay below. Every time we have driven that way since that first trip I look hopefully to see dolphins again, but so far, the timing has not been in our favor.

NOTE: The photo above, from our 2023 trip, shows Ruth and I with Pu’u Koa’e rearing up behind us and over the Kahakaloa Bay below.
