Welcoming Arms Of The Banyan

Posted on February 8, 2024

2/8/99: Packed and shipped our stuff. We barely made it with the suitcase and the box coming in just under 70lbs each. 70 is the limit!

2/8/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.

Beyond Makahiku Falls, as one climbs the Pipiwai Trail one of the most dramatic things you encounter is an enormous banyan tree with limbs that reach out as if the jungle were welcoming you with a warm, maternal embrace. The roots require a more attentive step so that you don’t trip. Pause for a while in the cool shade, look at the limbs that stretch 50 or more feet from the trunk, try to peak through the canopy to the trees heights, and then reflect on the history that this tree has endured. Banyan’s cal live well over 200 years.

NOTE: The photo above shows Ian, Josiah and I under the banyan tree on the Pipiwai Trail during a 2022 trip to Maui.
