2/2/99: Ruth and I took a walk this morning, and came across a dog on the loose. At first, he was growling protectively of his property, but regrettably I whistled and tried to calm him. After that he wouldn’t leave us alone and tried to follow us on our walk. I had to go to a neighbor of the dog owner and get help to put the dog back in the yard. Later, we also went back to the beach at Makena, but the waves were up and far too choppy to swim or snorkel. On our way home we did stop at Azeka’s in Kihei and picked up some of their famous teriyaki ribs for dinner though. That made the trip more than worth it!
2/2/24: *During our 1999 stay with Dad & Mom at the end of our round-the-world trip, we did not take many photos. So, I am posting photos and stories from some of our other trips to Maui over the years.
Hana town is located on the far eastern side of the island of Maui. The famous Road to Hana (starting from the airport in Kahului) is a roughly 64-mile-long stretch of twists and turns in and out of the gorges and spurs of the wet side (north facing and windward side) of the mountain of Haleakala. Consequently, the route passes through verdant jungle and right by many lovely waterfalls. The drive is slow because of the switchbacks and crowding, and can be dizzying because of the sometimes precipitous views down the cliffs to the ocean. But it is worth it and safe if you stick to the rules of the road.
NOTE: The photo above shows Ruth and I at one of the many waterfalls along the famous road to Hana, from our 2023 trip to Maui.
