And I thought We Were Travelling With Purpose

Posted on January 20, 2024

1/20/99: The four of us drove up past Lahaina to Kapalua to watch whales today… Even from so far a distance as the shore they are incredible to see. Maybe we’ll get a chance to go out on a boat someday… Maui is a place that the whales visit from January through march to give birth to their calves… And I thought we were travelling with purpose…

NOTE: The photo above shows the small dorsal fin of a humpback whale in Maalaea Bay, off McGregor Point on the island of Maui. Ruth took this photo from a whale watching tour boat in 2004.

During our 2004 visit to Maui, Ruth captured Ian (then 3 1/2 years old) and I keeping our eyes peeled for humpback whales in Maalaea Bay in 2004.
Another photo of a humpback whale dorsal fin breaking the surface of the water, from inside the whale watching tour boat.
This photo, taken during our 1998 visit at the end of our year of travel, shows the view looking south across Maalaea Bay from the McGregor Point light house. During whale watching season, this is a good spot to watch for humpback whales in the bay.
