Of Sultans And Salesmen

Posted on December 28, 2023

12/28/98: Breakfast at the “Superman Restaurant” again. I suspect the name comes from generous serving sizes… We took a tour of the Sultan’s Palace. Well worth a visit… As we walked back to town, we struck up a conversation with a guy who was going the same way. He gave us some tips on where to buy batik fabric, if we were shopping for it. We thanked him and had to split off when we passed the post office, we had to go in and get some postcard stamps. To our surprise (well, not really…) he sidled up to us again about a half a block after we exited the PO. He wanted to remind us where to go to buy batik…

I have no idea why the sultan was painted with pointed ears, but there you go.
The palace had a security force of guards that wore decorative head coverings and were dressed in batik sarongs with customized ceremonial knives tucked into their belts at the small of their back. Later I did purchase a batik sarong for myself, but could not find any similar knives for sale to bring home with me.
