The Great Wall

Posted on September 29, 2023

9/29/98: Went to the Great Wall today, but not all 13,170.70 miles of it… A defensive project begun around 220BC, work continued through the Ming Dynasty (from 1368AD–1644AD), it was originally built to keep enemies out and/or to control trade and immigration, but now it is just another sight to see… They say astronauts and satellites can see it from space. I don’t know about that, but one thing is for sure, it is big. Great in that sense at least. Today we were right there, dwarfed by just one small section that snaked off along the hazy hills … They do things big here often. The Forbidden City, which we saw yesterday. The famous canal system that weaves across the country. And the latest is the Three Gorges Dam project…

NOTE: The photo above shows the Great Wall snaking off into the distance of haze covered hills. A colorful little umbrella provides a bit of shade for a vendor selling water bottles to tourists.

It was a hazy day for capturing photos of the Great Wall snaking off into the distance. But the flowers along the way were glorious up close.
