The Forbidden City

Posted on September 28, 2023

9/28/98: Today we visited the Forbidden City. Famous British actor, Roger Moore, was our tour guide. On audio cassette of course. He was busy and couldn’t make it in-person… The palace complex was all spectacular, of course, for a history nerd like me… One thing I kept thinking as we listened to the narration was that emperors are often prisoners of the people, as much as they are rulers of the people… No one was ever allowed in this place (it was forbidden, after all), but rarely was the emperor or his family allowed out either!…

NOTE: The photo above shows Ruth at the entrance to the Forbidden City palace complex.

European castles have tapestries to tell stories through pictures woven with needle and thread. The Forbidden City palace has slabs of marble with stories carved in bas relief.
